MAYS LANDING — Students, staff, faculty and friends filled Atlantic Cape Community College’s Jonathan Pitney Gymnasium on the Mays Landing campus on October 24 with a bevy of energy, emotion and excitement at the Annual Buccaneers Madness Welcome Back Spirit Night.
As lively music bellowed from the speakers overhead, pom poms were aflutter as several staff members took to the court and sidelines to rally those in attendance, many of whom were decked out in gray and pink t-shirts in support of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students from the Academy of Culinary Arts offered delicious freshly-grilled beef sliders, popcorn, chips, cookies and beverages.
Each of the Buccaneers 10 athletics programs - Archery, Baseball, Esports, Men’s Basketball, Men’s Soccer, Men’s Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Soccer and Women’s Volleyball - were introduced and given a rousing ovation.
Prior to the start of the staff/faculty vs. students basketball game, attendees volunteered and tried their luck at several mini skill games, such as nerf archery target practice, belly ball and pass-kick-score soccer.
A stirring rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner was sung by Director of Student Support Services Rashawn Martin. The hoops contest was a lively affair featuring plenty of long-range three pointers, dazzling dribbling and layups by some of the youngest of the players, and flashy offense that produced a 37-37 tie with a final second layup by the students at the end of two halves. A one-minute overtime period led to a nail-biting 40-39 victory for the staff/faculty team.
